Digital Citizenship

It's about much more than online safety or a long list of don'ts. It's also about the do's that help create thoughtful, empathetic digital citizens who can wrestle with the important ethical questions at the intersection of technology and humanity.

Those do's include:

  • Using technology to make your community better

  • Engaging respectfully online with people who have different beliefs than you

  • Using technology to make your voice heard by public leaders and to shape public policy

  • Determine the validity of online sources of information

We Teach Digital Citizenship

Digital Citizenship can mean a lot of things and we have included a few of our favorite resources below. At CodeForce, we teach Digital Citizenship as a hybrid of citizenship, safety, and anti-bullying. We are inspired by our own experiences as parents and by the resources that we have discovered along the way.

  1. What is safe to share online?

  2. What is Copyright and how do we respect it? How can we generate our own license?

  3. How do we get permission to use other peoples work?

  4. How do we determine truth from fiction?

  5. How do we recognize a bully? How do we address it?

  6. Are you being a bully? How to recognize if you are being a bully without even knowing it.

  7. Do you know how to protect yourself from cyber attacks?

  8. What do you do if you are uncomfortable in any online situation? Who should you talk to?
